Shelter Diversion 101 for Municipalities

March 23, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Shelter Diversion is a strategy that prevents homelessness at the front door by helping people identify immediate alternative housing arrangements to shelter and, if necessary, connecting them with services and financial assistance to help them return to permanent housing. Diversion can reduce the number of households becoming homeless, the demand for shelter beds, and the size of program wait lists. This training will provide an overview of our homeless response system, thoroughly discuss the practice of shelter diversion; including staying housing focused, how to conduct a diversion conversation, linkage to services and community resources, and special considerations to have during the COVID-19 crisis.

This training is tailored to support municipal staff engaged in addressing homelessness weather or not the town is formally working on the template of actions outlined by Sustainable Connecticut. Additional emphasis and detail about Coordinated Access Network connections will be included. For information about Sustainable CT https://sustainablect.org/actions-certifications/actions#close (Action 12 is Effective, Compassionate Homelessness Prevention). For towns seeking certification this training meets part of the requirement for Action 12.1.1 ‘Designate and train a municipal representative on homeless services in your municipality’. You can find additional details at https://sustainablect.org/actions-certifications/actions#open/action/76.
