The Connecticut Coalition to End Homelessness (CCEH) is very pleased to offer a special opportunity for you to participate in a hands-on training to assist six community teams across Connecticut in using a promising community-based model to tackle youth homelessness at a local level. The training will provide community teams with tools to lay the foundation for building a coordinated and effective collaboration between local schools, youth, and community service providers to improve local response to youth homelessness. Heather Mosher, Ph.D., of the Institute for Community Research, is a social/community psychologist with expertise in using research tools in ways that are fun, easy, and effective at engaging communities in learning and strategic action. In partnership with CCEH and a team in Torrington, Connecticut, Dr. Mosher led the development and evaluation of a model for communities to tackle youth homelessness at a local level by:

    • Learning about the barriers that exist for youth in accessing available resources and how to improve youth access to these resources

    • Building the capacity of schools and community organizations to identify unstably housed youth and connect them to help

    • Improving resources, programs and policies to reflect the needs and preferences of youth

At this workshop, your community team will:

  • Receive a copy of the guidebook that provides tools and step-by-step instructions on how to plan and implement a local school-community initiative to address youth homelessness in communities across Connecticut;

  • Learn best practices for developing a school-community initiative with youth voice;

  • Build consensus among your community team members on your primary goal and milestones to achieve this goal; and

  • Come away with a preliminary plan for your community that will increase collaboration and identify strategies for improving local community response to youth homelessness.
